TOUR DU MONDE
Sauvignon Blancs and Syrahs of the World..
Wine Aroma Education & Wine Tasting
Sauvignon Blanc vines mainly grow on chalky and
clay soils, or sometimes gravel soils.  Sauvignon
Blanc goes by the name of Blanc Fume in the
United States and New Zealand.  It has very
characteristic aromas of lemon, grapefruit, peach..
or sometimes boxwood.  When the grapes were not
harvested fully ripe, this scent is grassier.
Sauvignon Blanc is the king of the dry wines of
Bordeaux, where it contributes its acidity and
freshness to blends with Semillon and Muscadelle.
It stands alone in the wines of Sancerre and Pouilly
Fume (Loire Valley).  Its is also grown in Italy, a little
in Spain and of course in California and New
Zealand!

Syrah wines are deep red, almost purple in their
youth, they are rich, powerful and full-bodied.. with
notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, truffle,
liquorice, pepper... Syrah is used mostly
unblended, except in Australia, where it is
sometimes blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Syrah is the queen of the northern Cotes du Rhone,
where it gives wonderful results.  In Australia, it is
called Shiraz, and is outstanding!  It is also grown
successfully in the United Stated around Santa
Barbara, as well as in South Africa.
